Administrative HistoryNew Connexion Methodists were first established in Clay Cross in 1824 (Bagshaw's History of Derbyshire, 1846, p. 682). A new church was built in 1848 (White's Directory, 1857, p. 792). In 1907 New Connexion Methodists joined United Free Methodists and Bible Christians to form the United Methodist Church. In 1932 United Methodists joined Wesleyan and Primitive Methodists to form the Methodist Church. In Clay Cross the High Street Methodist Church joined Market Street (formerly Wesleyan) Methodist Church in 1964 to form Central Methodist Church.
