| Administrative History | 'The Pentrich Revolution' is the term usually used to describe events on 9 June 1817 in the area including Eastwood (Nottinghamshire), South Wingfield and Pentrich. Sometimes called the last armed civil uprising in England, involving the unemployed and 'disaffected' from several villages. During it's course, a farm servant in South Wingfield was shot dead. Local militia rounded up the supposed culprits, who were tried for treason at Derby Assizes in October 1817. Three ringleaders, Brandreth, Ludlam and Turner were hanged; others were sentenced to transportation or imprisonment. |
