Administrative HistoryThe first Local Boards of Health were set up in 1848 to administer services relating to public health in populated areas not covered by Borough Councils. Under the Public Health Act 1872, they were designated Urban Sanitary Authorities, but the Swadlincote authority was always known as the Local Board. It was formed in 1871, with Gresley and Newhall being amalgamated in 1893. Urban Sanitary Authorities became Urban District Councils under the Local Government Act 1894, with wider power and responsibilities. The Swadlincote UDC first met in January 1895. Urban District Councils were abolished in 1974 by the Local Government Act 1972.
Custodial HistoryThese records were deposited at Derbyshire Record Office by Swadlincote UDC and its successor authorities at various dates since 1975.
