Administrative HistoryFrom 1848 Local Boards of Health were set up in populated areas to administer services relating to public health, such as provision of improved sewerage and water supply, street cleaning, maintenance of highways and supervision of building regulations. Under the Public Health Act (1872) Local Boards of Health were designated Urban Sanitary Authorities, although Buxton does not appear to have used the new title. In 1894 Urban District Councils took over these and other local government functions. Buxton became a Borough Council in 1917 until its abolition in 1974. The minutes of the Local Board of Health, Urban District Council and Borough Council and committees have been listed. Some committees spanned more than one period of local government in Buxton. The committee minutes are therefore listed in chronological order based on the date of the earliest surviving minute book. The minutes are signed unless indicated otherwise.
