Description- 'Bow Street list of offenders at large, 1772-1773' (1 file), containing:
Notices from J[ohn] Fielding, Public Office, Bow Street, London variously to Mayors, Chief Magistrates, Clerks of the Peace, Town Clerk: commends sharing of information about criminals at large throughout the country; proposes that the homes of High Constables on major roads leading from London should be distinguished by a name board to enable travellers to report thefts; proposes a tax on places of public entertainment to fund High Constables’ expenditure; celebrates (in very ornate language) the success of his policies; asks for names and abodes of High Constables and for information about appointment of gaol chaplains; refers to compilation and circulation of lists of offenders at large and to “The Public Hue and Cry,” a national publication; reports that the King approves of his plan.
