Description | Hair Powder Duty Acts of 35 Geo III caps 49 and 112 (1795) required persons using hair powder to take out a certificate annually with a stamp duty of one guinea payable. The clergy, unless wealthy, and non-commissioned officers were exempt. Lists were to be sent by the commissioners to the Clerk of the Peace. There are two kinds of lists represented here: those on printed forms giving number of certificate, date, name, description eg housekeeper [householder] or wife or son of.........., status or occupation, sub-divided by place, and more informal lists only giving name, description and place, possibly draft lists for the printed forms (old number Box 15) |
