Administrative History | A mine at Swadlincote by Messrs Hall and Boardman in 1852 was sunk to form the Swadlincote Old (or Hearthcote) Colliery. It worked the Eureka, Kilburn, Yard and Woodfield coal seams. The colliery was transferred to the National Coal Board as a result of the nationalisation of the coal industry in 1947, when it became part of the East Midlands Division Area No. 7. A drift mine opened there in 1962, but wasn't in use for long ,as the site closed in 1965. The colliery was known locally as Swad Colliery. |
