Administrative HistoryA shaft was first sunk at Pilsley in 1866 by the Pilsley Colliery Company. Further shafts were sunk between 1873 and 1875. These worked the Blackshale, Tupton and Deep Hard coal seams. With the nationalisation of the coal industry in 1947, the colliery came under the control of the National Coal Board, being part of the East Midlands Division Area No. 1. The pit was finally closed in 1957.
