Langwith Colliery
National Coal Board
Administrative History
The land for the site that would become Langwith Colliery was leased from the Earl of Bathurst Sheepbride Coal and Iron Company in 1873. Sinking began in 1876 and coal was finally reached by 1880. During its lifetime it worked five coal seams.
On the nationalisation of the coal industry in 1947 Langwith Colliery came under the control of the National Coal Board and was placed in East Midlands Division Area No. 1. On internal reorganistion of the NCB it came within the North Derbyshire Area in 1967. The colliery finally closed in August 1978.
