Bolsover Colliery was about a mile to the west of the castle and was the first pit to be developed and opend by the Bolsover Colliery Company, following a lease being taken out from the Duke of Portland in 1889, with the coal seam was reached by 1891. The seams worked were the Tupton, Top Hard and Threequarter seams.
On the nationalisation of the coal industry in 1947 Bolsover Colliery was transferred into the control of the National Coal Board. The colliery was closed in 1993.
