Title
Photographs of the Pumping House for the Persevere Shaft at Pinxton Colliery
Date
[mid 20th cent]
Description
Includes 3 negatives. The Pumping House was built in 1828 and demolished for scrap in 1943 during World War 2. All the photographs were donated by Mr E. Williamson of Alfreton, who also supplied notes on the backs of them. Mr Williamson states that the name "Perserverance" might suggest the pump was installed by George Stephenson, whose motto was "perservere". He also suggests that the castings might have been made at Chesterfield and that George's son, Robert Stephenson, might have supervised its erection.
