| Administrative History | Mining operations for Pilsley Colliery, situated to the north of the village of Pilsley in the parish of North Wingfield, were began in 1864-1866 by Thomas Holdsworth. A public company made up of the major landowners of Pilsley was formed for the colliery, with Holdsworth being its Managing Director, in which post he remained until his death in 1893. The colliery worked three coal seams, comprising the Deep Hard (Pit No. 1), Blackshale (Pit No. 2) and Tupton (Pit No. 3). Its highest manpower was recorded as 1,302 in 1913. Pilsley Colliery came into the control of the National Coal Board as a result of the nationalisation of the coal industry in 1947. The colliery itself closed in 1957. |
