Island of the west coast of Africa. It's largest city, Malabo, is the capital of Equatorial Guinea.
It was first settled in the first millenium BC. It was colonised by the Portuguese and renamed Fernando Po in 1494 in honour of the Portuguese navigator who was was the first European to land there. The island was amongst other parts of west African to be ceded to Spain in 1778.
