Dam Busters; 1943-; No. 617 Squadron was a Royal Air Force aircraft squadron based at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland. It operated the Tornado GR4 in the ground attack and reconnaissance role. It is commonly known as the "Dambusters", for its actions during Operation Chastise against German dams during the Second World War.
Royal Air Force; 1918-; The United Kingdom's aerial warfare force. Formed from the Royal Flying Corps towards the end of the First World War in 1918; the oldest independent air force in the world.
Wallis; Sir; Barnes (1887-1979); Born Ripley, Derbyshire; scientist, engineer and inventor. Invented the "bouncing bomb" used by the Royal Air Force in Operation Chastise (the "Dambusters" raid) to attack the dams of the Ruhr Valley during World War II. The practice runs were at Derwent Dam, Derbyshire.
