Byron; Lord; George Gordon Noel (1788-1824); Of Newstead Abbey, Nottinghamshire. 6th Baron Byron, commonly known simply as Lord Byron, was an English poet and a leading figure in the Romantic movement.
Moore; Thomas (1779-1852); Poet, born in Dublin. Lived for a time at Mayfield, near Ashbourne.
Brittain; Vera (1893-1970); Lived in Buxton, Derbyshire, when young. Author and pacifist.
Gilchrist; Robert Murray (1867-1917); Novelist of the supernatural and of Peak District life, born Sheffield; lived at Eyam and at Cartledge Hall, Holmesfield.
Ruskin; John (1819-1900); Critic, art historian, social reformer and philanthropist. Famously denounced the building of the railway at Monsal Dale, Derbyshire. Founded the Guild of St George in 1871 to champion agriculture and traditonal crafts, including a colony at Totley which failed.
