History
The first Methodist Church was the Primitive church on Sheffield Road opposite Shaw Street, built in 1840. It was used as a school room for many years. A new church was built in 1870 on Station Road, Whittington Moor with a school room on the opposite side of the road in 1904. These buildings were requisitioned by the British government in 1941 and the congregation amalgamated with the former Wesleyan congregation approximately 100 yards away on Sheffield Road. The church on Station Road was sold in 1952 and the Sunday School room in 1970.
