History
The firm established by Samuel Sims (1849-1930) was active by 1891, shown in Kelly's Directory for Derbyshire as wholesale boot & shoe dealer and draper and in Kelly's Directory for 1899 as wholesale boot & shoe and general dealers and brush manufacturers. In the census of 1901 and 1911 the business is described as shovel and brush manufacturer. The firm exhibited at British Industires Fairs (1937-1957). The sons of Samuel Sims involved in the business were William Harold (born 1876), Rupert Stanley Carr (born 1888) and Norman Douglas (born 1893) Although the business was named Samuel Smith and Sons it is clear from the 1911 census entry that three daughters also worked in the firm: Flora (born 1874), Margaret Carr (born 1882) and Ethel (born 1885).
