Biography
Alfred Miller Mundy was the seventh of thirteen children born to Edward Miller Mundy II and his wife Nelly Barton. He married Jane Hindmarsh with whom he had five children; Maria Jane (1843-1902), Nellie Hindmarsh (d 1912), Augusta Marian (d 1893), Edward Grey (d 1849 aged 10 months), Alfred Edward Miller Mundy (1849-1920).
He served in the British Army in Australia until 1839. Whilst a serving officer, he became a Magistrate in Tasmania in 1835, and Justice of the Peace in 1837. In 1840 he became acting Clerk of the Council, Private Secretary to the Governor, Sir George Grey, in 1841, and Colonial Secretary 1848-1849. When Alfred's elder brother, Edward Miller Mundy III died without children in 1849, Alfred inherited the Shipley estate and returned to England.
