Biography | George Monck was born in Potheridge, Devon, the second suon of Thomas Monck and Elizabeth Smith. He began his military career in 1675, serving in the Eighty Years' War until 1638, and subsequently in Ireland during the Irish Rebellion of 1641. He fought on both sides during the English Civil War, first for the Royalists, until he was captured in 1644, and then, after his release in 1647, for the Roundheads. He supported the restoration of the monarchy, and in 1665 returned to sea during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. |
