Biography
On 19 November 1722, Scipio “the son of a stranger, living in the island of Barbados” was baptised at St Paul’s, Scropton. It's unclear whether Scipio was an adult or child when he was baptised. Foston Hall, the home of the Bate family, was in the parish of Scropton, so Scipio may also have come from the Bate plantations in Barbados, or perhaps a friend or family member of the Bates may have brought him when they were visiting Foston Hall. The name Scipio indicates he was likely enslaved, as Classical Roman names were often used for enslaved people.
