Patons and Baldwins was created in 1920 through the merger of two companies: J & J Baldwin and Partners (founded in the 1770s in Halifax) and John Paton Son and Co (founded in 1814 in Alloa). A branch of the firm operated in the Derwent Mills, Matlock. The company merged with J & P Coats Ltd in 1961.
