Biography | Born Caroline Harward, she married the textile manufacturer John Smedley (1803-1874) in 1847. During their honeymood in Switzerland, John Smedley became ill and went to a Yorkshire Hydro to take the waters. A convert to hydrotherapy, John established Smedley's Hydro in Matlock where Caroline treated the female patients. She published a 'Ladies' Manual of Practical Hydrotherapy' in 1873. In 1882 she built the Smedley's Memorial Hydropathic Hospital as a memorial to her husband. She lived at Riber Castle near Matlock until her death in 1892. |
