History
There were several pits called Upper Birchwood and the early history of them is complicated and unclear. It would seem that the Butterley Company operated a colliery there from at least 1842. The Butterley Company continued to work the colliery into the 20th century. In 1923 it was known as Old Birchwood Colliery. It ceased to be worked by the Butterley Company
