History
Edmund Potter was born in 1802 at Ardwick, Manchester, the second of six children of James Potter, merchant, and his wife, Mary. In 1825 he went into partnership with his cousin Charles as a calico printer at Dinting Vale, Glossop. The business failed in 1831 and the partnership was dissolved. However Potter continuing under administration, discharged his final debts in 1836, and resumed trading on his own account. Under his stewardship, Dinting Vale grew to be reputedly the largest calico printing works in the world.
