Biography
Born in Kavala in the Ottoman Empire, now a city in modern Greece. As a military commander in the Albanian Ottoman force, he was sent to recover Egypt from French occupation under Napoleon. Having ruled as de facto leader of Egypt since 1805, he waged war against the sultan and following a peace brokered in 1842, he established a dynasty that ruled over Egypt and Sudan until the revolution of 1952.
