Biography
During his lifetime, Phillipps amassed a collection of over 60,000 manuscripts and other books. Although he endeavoured to ensure the collection would stay together after his deaht, entering discussions with the Bodleian Library and later the British Musuem. Both negotiations were unsuccessful and ultimately the collection was sold in multiple sales from 1885 by his grandson. By 1946 the majority was still unsold but purchased by the London antiquarian booksellers Lionel and Philip Robinson, and was then sold on by them. Items from the collection are now to be found in various public repositories, including the Bodleian Library and several county record offices (including a small number of items in Derbyshire).
