Biography
Charles Augustus Ollivierre (1876-1949) was the first black West Indian man to play county cricket in England. He toured the country with the West Indian Cricket Team in 1900 and lived in Glossop to obtain his residential qualification for playing county cricket. At the time of the 1901 census he is described as a Writing Clerk, and was boarding with the caretaker of St Luke's Church, William Cunnington. He first appeared for Derbyshire in July 1902 and retired in 1907. He played for Darley Dale Cricket Club between 1906 and 1911 and was latterly a Vice President. After leaving Derbyshire he also played for and coached at clubs in Yorkshire. At the time of the 1939 census he is described as a Cricket Coach, and is living in the boarding house of James and Laura Bowman at 14 Banks Avenue, Pontefract, Yorkshire. He died in Pontefract in March 1949.
