History
The colliery at Oxcroft was first sunk by the Staveley Coal & Iron Company in 1901. It was taken over in 1918 by the Oxcroft Colliery Company Limited, which seems to have operated as a subsidiary of Staveley Coal and Iron Company Limited. In 1919 a large gas explosion occurred in which 6 men died and 7 were injured.
The colliery was transferred in 1947 to the National Coal Board as a result of the nationalisation of the coal industry. In 1949 a drift mine was open on the site to connect the workings with those at Barlborough No. 1 nearby. Following the closure of Balborough No. 1 Colliery in 1949, any coal left in that area was brought up by Oxcroft. The site at Oxcroft finally closed in 1974.
