History	The colliery was first sunk in 1875 on land near Heanor owned by the Miller Mundy family. At its height, the mine once employed 1,500 men. In 1943 there was a gas explosion that led to the deaths of 4 miners and injured 2 others. It was caused when shot-firing at a supply gate. With the nationalisation of the coal industry in 1947, Coppice Colliery was transferred into the control of the National Coal Board. The colliery was closed in 1966.
