BiographyRaleigh Alonzo Scott, was born into slavery, the illegitimate son of an African mother and a Native American indian father. He was freed in 1899 and made his way to England to spread the gospel. He preached at a small chapel in Chesterfield where he was known by his indian name, Wallawatha. He married a local woman but, when their son was only four years old, he abandoned them, forcing his wife into service and ensuring young Raleigh suffered depression and feelings of rejection all his life. He never fulfilled his dream of traveling to America to find his father. He ended his life in 1969 in a suicide pact with his only child, Joan.
