| History | A lease on land owned by Mr de Rodes was first taken out by the Staveley Coal & Iron Company in 1871 to work coal in the area that would eventually become Barlborough No. 1 Colliery in 1871, with sinking beginning in 1873. The production of coal was delayed in expectation of the Staveley to Worksop railway, which had run behind schedule. For this reason, coal was first being produced in 1874. Production seemed to work well as in 1878 the site had onsite facilities which included railway sidings, washery and brickworks. The coal worked at the colliery were the Top Hard and Clowne coal seams. The Top Hard seam was especially used by the Staveley Company as it proved to be helpful for the iron making side of their industry. The colliery was bought by the Oxcroft Colliery Company in 1930.
A drift mine was started in 1938 but the work was halted during World War 2. It recommenced near the end of the war and was finally completed in 1944. The colliery transferred to the National Coal Board as a result of the nationalisation of the coal industry. By 1949, when Oxcroft also had a drift mine, and the decision was taken to merge the workings with Barlborough. In 1949 the decision was made to close Barlborough in favour of continued working at Oxcroft, due to faults in the seams and water problems. Any remaining coal from this side of workings continued being taken up to the Oxcroft surface until that colliery closed in 1974. |
