| Biography | George Canning was a Tory member of Parliament, first elected in 1793. He served in various ministerial posts from 1795, including - Treasurer of the Navy (1804-1806) - President of the Board of Control (1816-1821) - Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1807-1809) and again 13 September 1822-20 April 1827, during which period he was also Leader of the House of Commons. - Prime Minister, from 12 April 1827 until his death on 8 August. He also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 10 April 1827. |
