He inherited the Hopton Hall estate on the death of Edith Mary, widow of Philip Lyttleton Gell. He married Aileen Edith Pauline Maunsell in 1920 They had two children, Philip Antony Maunsell Gell (1921-1998) and Elizabeth Edith Maunsell Gell, later Lea (born 1927)
