He served on Nicholas Boudin's expedition to Australian waters in 1800-1803 as zoologist; he and his colleagues gathered over 100,000 specimens; after Baudin's death in 1803 he wrote up the written account of the expedition; after his own death the second volume was completed by Louis de Freycinet.
