He was ordained as a deacon and a priest in 1818 and was curate of Hartley Wespall in Hampshire, 1818-1827, and Franham, Surrey, 1827-1828; he was appointed archdeacon of New South Wales in 1828; he was consecrated as the first Bishop of Australia in 1836; he returned to England in 1852
