Administrative History
The Local Government Act 1888 empowered county councils to appoint Medical Officers of Health with a range of public health duties. These functions were largely transferred to regional and area health authorities in 1973, then to district health authorities in 1982 (with a requirement to appoint a Director of Public Health from 1988) and to NHS Primary Care Trusts in 2001 before being returned to local government in 2013.
