Administrative HistoryIf an individual died intestate (without leaving a will) or if the named executors were unavailable, application could be made to a probate court for letters of administration for the estate. This application was normally made by the next of kin, a friend or a creditor. The applicant had to swear to discharge funeral expenses and debts. Also, he/she was sometimes required to enter into a bond.
