Title
Letter from Thomas Milwarde, Lincolns Inn [London], to Henry Agard, Foston
Date
28 Apr 1629
Description
Agard's servant John Clarke has been forced to compound for [Agard's purchase of the Lordship of] Scropton, to prevent its being conceded to two Londoners. Assures him that £800 would have been insufficient to secure the purchase, and refers to the use of a debt of £900 owed to Agard by the Earl of Anglesey. Of the gentlemen committed "about the parliament business" [the arrest of members of parliament who had encouraged merchants to withhold tax payments], one is still in prison and it is unknown how the others shall be dealt with. The Dunkirkers [Flemish privateers] rob the English merchants daily, such that many refuse to trade with them.
