Description | The North Georgia Gazette and Winter Chronicle was a weekly newspaper edited by Edward Sabine, which served as a form of entertainment and source of amusement for the officers of the Royal Navy expedition to winter over in the Arctic, at Winter Harbour on Melville Island, under the command of William Edward Parry. Its pages are filled with poems, jokes and anecdotes aimed at keeping morale high during the bleak and lightless months. The newspaper ran from 1 Nov 1819 to 20 March 1820. On the front endpaper is a manuscript passage (in an unknown hand) on the pleasures of books. Published by John Murray, London. Bookplate of Philip Lyttelton Gell on inside front cover. |
