Gell family of Hopton Hall, Wirksworth
Administrative HistoryArthur Daniel Gell was the son of Rev Philip Gell and Elizabeth Dod. In 1838 he sailed to South Australia where he was the private secretary of the Governor, Colonel George Gawler. When Gawler was recalled in 1841, Gell remained in the colony and worked as a clerk in the Colonial Secretary's Department. In 1848 Edward J. Eyre, who had been appointed lieutenant-governor of New Zealand, selected him as his private secretary. Gell drowned when the ship Calypso was wrecked on the voyage from Sydney to New Zealand.
