TitleCommonplace book of Lady Franklin, comprising largely of copies of passages on religious or philosophical themes
Date1847-1851
DescriptionThere are 284 numbered passages, ranging in length from one sentence to seven pages; at the back is an index for the sources of quotations, with no sources for numbers 1-44, which may have been copied from an older book, according to a note by Philip Lyttelton Gell. Some of the passages are in French.
Notes at the start of the volume state that it belonged to Jane, Lady Franklin; the book was begun in February 1847 and ended in the early part of 1851; the index exhibits her range of range of reading and that probably another volume exists, with one dated note from F.J. Woodward saying that it is in Lady Franklin's hand, Nov 1951.
