Administrative History | Frederick Gell (1820-1902) was the son of Reverend Philip Gell and his wife Elizabeth (nee Dod). He was the brother of John Philip Gell, who married Eleanor Isabella Franklin on 7 June 1849. Frederick was ordained as a deacon in 1843 and become a fellow of Christ Church, Cambridge, where he was later a lecturer, dean and assistant tutor, 1849-1861. He also served as a chaplain to the Bishop of London, 1859-1861. He was appointed Bishop of Madras in 1861 and remained in that post until his retirement in 1898. He died at Culford, Coonoor, Southern India on 25 March 1902. |
