Administrative HistoryMary Price (1814-1894) was the daughter of Major James Franklin of the East India Company and the 1st Bengal Cavalry. She was also the niece and later the ward of Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin. An orphan following the death of her parents in India, she accompanied her uncle and his family to Van Diemen's Land [now Tasmania], when he was appointed Lieutenant Governor there in 1836. On 12 June 1838 at Hobart she married John Giles Price, convict administrator, who was killed by convicts in March 1857. They had 8 children, six of whom lived into adulthood: John Frederick, later known as Sir Frederick Price (1839-1927), James Franklin (born 1841, slain by natives of Mulgrave Island in the Torres Strait in 1878), Thomas Caradoc later known as Colonel Tom Price (1842-1911), Emily Mary (born 1845), Anna Clara (born 1846) and Jane de Winton (born c1850).
