Description
Biographical History:
Amanda Ormond, born in Bedford in 1980, is a mortgage broker residing in Derby. She moved to Derbyshire in childhood following her parents’ divorce and returned to Derby at age 27. She is the mother of two sons. Amanda studied art at foundation level and pursued various careers, gaining qualifications through night school. Her reflections include experiences of parenting, neurodivergence in her family, and raising a deaf child.
Scope and Content:
Amanda her upbringing, family dynamics, and experiences of motherhood. She reflects on her early life in Bedfordshire and Derbyshire, her education, and her career path. A significant portion of the interview focuses on her experiences of pregnancy, childbirth, and raising her first son, who is profoundly deaf.
Amanda recounts the emotional and physical challenges of pregnancy and an emergency caesarean birth. She describes the impact of her son's deafness on their family life, including early diagnosis, use of hearing aids and cochlear implants, and the importance of physical contact and routine in his development. Amanda also discusses the role of music in their lives, her son’s growing passion for it, and the support networks they accessed, including a local deaf support group.
The interview concludes with reflections on parenting her second son, and the contrasts between raising a hearing and a deaf child, particularly in terms of communication and bedtime routines.
