Administrative History | Ernest Carroll (d 2012) was the quarry manager at Peak Dale with S. Taylor Frith & Co. Ltd. The company had been established in 1905 following the merger of the businesses of Samuel Taylor and Philip Speakman. The Kelly's Directory of Cheshire for 1902 describes Taylor as a lime burner and merchant, coal, firebrick and cement merchant and canal carrier of 78 High Street, Runcorn as well as listing him as the lime works at Dove Holes. Taylor was later joined by his son-in-law J. Mason Frith whose sons Arthur and Frank continued the business as Taylor Frith. Speakman's coal sales manager, and later partner at Settle Speakman & Co. Ltd, was a William Carroll. Carroll's sons, John and Ernest, as well as their sons, William and Ernest respectively, also joined the firm, with S. Taylor Frith & Co. being acquired by Settle Speakman & Co. Ltd in 1954. |
