Administrative HistoryThese properties came into the ownership of Job Smith in 1900. Job was responsible for the Matlock Tramway which ran up Bank Road. The depositor's grandfather, and Job's brother, Herbert Smith (son of Herbert Smith), owned printing works in Matlock. He Herbert married Ella Fox, who founded, and became editor of, the local newspaper the "Matlock Mercury".

Ella's brother, Fred, served in the cavalry unit of the Hussars during the First World War, before transferring to the 5th Dorsetshire Regiment. He was in the Dardanelles during the Gallipoli campaign, and entered the Balkans in September 1915 before being transferred to France. Tradically, he was accidentally shot and killed by a sentry 11 months later.
