Administrative History | Stephen Glover, in his 'History and Directory of the Borough of Derby', notes that George Beeland and William Henry Wood began trading from Iron Gate in 1849. The partnership between Beeland and Wood was dissolved by mutual consent in January 1850 and from then on George Beeland continued the wholesale drapers and cloth merchants as sole owner. The firm served customers from around the county for repairs, new clothing and servants' livery, and the ledgers include names from county families such as Arkwright, Harpur Crewe, Mundy, Sitwell and Curzon. The business closed in 1862. |
