Title
Probate of John Barnes of Ashgate, yeoman: to his wife Elizabeth, an annuity of £15 for life (as long as she does not remarry) to be paid out of his farm at Newbold, called Newbold Fields, in lieu of all dower but if she remarries again, the annuity to be reduced to £2; to his son Edmund Barnes, £200; whereas his son-in-law Edward Bruerton Clayton owes him £100, the said sum is bequeathed to such person or uses as his daughter Mary Clayton shall direct, with bequest of a further £100 to the same uses; to his daughter Alice Shemwell £100 to be paid within a year of his wife's death; to his granddaughter Mary, daughter of Thomas Hardy, £100 at 21; to his daughter Ann Greaves £100; to his son David Barnes all his messuages, lands, etc. whatsoever with all his personal estate, charged with the payment of his funeral expenses and the above legacies (will dated 21 September 1776).
Codicil (dated 11 October 1779): to his wife Elizabeth, the messuage at Ashgate with garden fold and yard, with the use of the furniture for life, with proviso that she is to replace everything she breaks or spoils. Proved at Chesterfield.
