TitleJ Ashton, Chesterfield, to J G Barnes
Date22 Jan 1848
DescriptionI have examined the underground workings at Barns Colliery, Dronfield and find the coal for 44 yards in breadth from the ancient level to be of inferior quality and scarcely worth getting; as the endings and board gates are driven out, they may get it at a reduced price, if you can get the parties to agree; I think it worth £45-£50 per acre; the coal in the deep of the estate is very good but in the northward heading there is a downcast fault; they have driven 22 yards in the blackshale; there is also a downcast fault below the present level; there appears to be a considerable quantity of water in the ancient level; I cannot say what quality of tender coal there is.
