Will of David Barnes of Ashgate gentleman: to his wife, Ellen Barnes, a dwelling house and garden at Ashgate with Cocker Croft and another croft at the head thereof with all his share of lands, messuages etc. at Newbold Fields, for her life with remainder to his son John Gorell Barnes; the remainder of his messuages, lands, etc. at Ashgate and elsewhere, to John Gorell Barnes; to his wife all the tenant right in the land he holds of the Duke of Portland and Francis Edmunds with all his household furniture, farming stock and implements, until his son John is 21; all his share in trade and business (vis. iron trade under the name of Barnes and Co at the Warf Furnaces and Forge at Newbold; coal trade at the Ashgate pits in partnership with John Wilcockson; wool and worsted trade in partnership with John Nodder) to his wife, John Hardy of Newbold, yeoman and his brother in law John Bargh, upon trust to carry on the same until John is 21 and then to deliver the same to John with all profits etc.; the residue of his estate (subject to legacies) to his wife for the maintenance of their children until John is 21; to his daughters Mary and Ellen Barnes, £500 each at 21 or marriage; to his wife, £400; £40 to be laid out in securing a life annuity for Martha Newbold, his servant; to John Hardy and John Bargh, £20 each.
